Puffin is a fast, quiet, native Mac app that gathers Mail, Calendar, Talk and Files into one window. It talks to the servers you already have, with nothing to install on them.

Mail goes straight to your mail host over IMAP and SMTP, and it doesn’t have to be your Nextcloud’s. Several accounts sit side by side, with All Inboxes across them. Conversations, keyboard-first triage, undo, search, snooze and drafts are all there. Remote images stay blocked until you allow a sender. For most addresses, the address alone is enough to find the server settings.

Calendar works over CalDAV with your Nextcloud, in month, week and day views. Drag events to move or resize them. Puffin handles repeating events, reminders, subscriptions and meetings with guests. You can answer an invitation from the mail it arrives in, and give a meeting its own Talk room.

Talk brings Nextcloud’s chat into the same window, with replies, reactions, files and notifications for messages and calls. Calls themselves hand off to Talk.

Files browses your Nextcloud over WebDAV. Preview a file in Quick Look, or open it in its own app.

Puffin has no account, no analytics and no tracking. You sign in with Nextcloud in the browser, and Puffin gets an app password of its own, so it never sees your real one. Everything stays on your servers in standard formats, so you can stop using Puffin tomorrow and lose nothing.

What’s new

  1. 0.2.0

    The first public release.

    Added

    • The toolbox frame. Mail, Calendar, Talk and Files are equals, named side by side on a rail, each in the same frame of places, list and work.
    • Puffin’s colours: Darkness, Pollen Yellow, Grey Blue and Deep Scarlet, designed for light and dark alike.
    • Iconoir icons throughout.
    • Talk. Conversations and chat over Nextcloud Talk: replies, reactions, editing and deleting, shared images, sending files, starting a conversation, and notifications for messages and calls. Calls hand off to Talk. Kept on disk, so it opens at once and works offline. A meeting’s chat opens from the event, and a mail’s sender can be messaged on Talk.
    • Files. Browse the Nextcloud over WebDAV, preview in Quick Look, open a file in its own app, and documents in Nextcloud Office.
    • iPhone push for Talk, through a small stateless proxy hosted by Creative Oak. Notifications are encrypted for the phone and decrypted on it.
    • All Inboxes, on the Mac and the iPhone, and Send to.
    • Multi-select on the iPhone: pick several mails and archive, flag, move, snooze, junk or delete them at once.
    • Answered marks on conversations you have replied to.
    • Distribution outside the App Store: a notarized disk image, updated in place by Sparkle.
    • Crash and hang reports kept locally, and Help → Export Diagnostics….
    • Invitations sent by the Nextcloud itself, in a design of its own.

    Changed

    • Mail that sets its own colours sits on paper in dark mode, as its sender drew it, instead of being painted dark.
    • The week opens at six, and every week is drawn at the same scale.
    • The Nextcloud account is held as an app password on every device.
    • Plain words for why a mail server could not be reached.

    Fixed

    • Deleting one occurrence of a repeating event no longer deletes the series, and a whole series can be deleted.
    • Meetings the server only restamped can be edited and deleted.
    • Offline flag changes are kept until the server has them.
    • Faster syncs and lighter rendering: no re-reading a mailbox when nothing changed, and no redoing a message’s HTML on every hover.

    Security

    • A quoted message’s code can no longer run in the rich editor.
    • Talk links follow the same rules as links in mail.
